Worked example

How much tax on a Rs. 200,000 salary in 2018-19?

Rs. 5,000 a month (Rs. 60,000 a year), leaving Rs. 195,000 take-home, an effective rate of 2.5%. Rs. 2,400,000 a year falls in the Rs. 1,240,000–2,500,000 slab: Rs. 2,000 plus 5% of the Rs. 1,160,000 above Rs. 1,240,000.

7 slabs: 0% up to Rs. 400,000 a year, then Rs. 1,000 flat, Rs. 2,000 flat, 5%, 15%, 20%, with 25% on income above Rs. 8,000,000. Each rate applies only to the income inside its slab.

From 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019, under the Finance Supplementary (Amendment) Act 2018. Employers use them for the monthly deduction under section 149 in that period, and they are the rates for the return for that tax year.

A resident individual whose salary was more than 50% of taxable income. Below that share, the rates for non-salaried individuals applied instead.

What changed from 2016-17

The Finance Act 2018 first merged salaried and other rates; the Finance Supplementary (Amendment) Act 2018 then restored a separate salaried table for the whole year, with flat Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 2,000 bands and a 25% top rate above Rs. 8,000,000.
